Down is the ultimate in softness, warmth and luxury. Down is also renowned for its durability and lightness of weight. What you need to know

Down is a fluffy cluster located underneath bird feathers. As these clusters intertwine, tiny air pockets are created which trap insulating heat and provide a constant body temperature. Down is used as insulation in down bedding, especially down pillows and down comforters. Down is mixed with feathers in down featherbeds to make them more fluffy while still adding the bulk needed for support.

Down is analyzed by hand and separated into the following:

Down
Down fiber
Down residue (including dirt)
Feathers
Quill feathers
Land bird feathers (such as chicken feathers)
Goose or duck feathers
Color (white or gray or other)
Size of down clusters

Types of down

Duck down is the least expensive down.
White Goose down is the most commonly used down.
Grey Goose down is used in items made with darker material.
Eiderdown is the rarest down. It is also the finest and warmest of down products. Female eider ducks pluck their own down and use it to cover and warm their eggs. The rare eider down is harvested by hand from abandoned duck nests.

Down fill power

The insulation qualities of down are measured by fill power: 1 ounce of down = XXX cubic inches. The higher the cubic inches (the fill power of the down), the more fluffy and warm the down will be. Very high-quality down will reach or exceed a fill power of 700; still, even the lower fill power in down may be enough for your needs. The warmth and comfort provided by down fill in any down bedding usually exceeds any other material.

Fill power is tested by placing 1 ounce of down in a container and then stirring it. Loft is measured in cubic inches. The down is then compressed and left to sit untouched for 24 hours, after which the cubic inches are again measured. The space that 1 ounce of down occupies (in cubic inches) is the fill power.

700 plus is outstanding quality in down bedding.
600-700 is excellent quality.
525-600 is good quality.

The scent of down products

All natural products have a unique smell, and down is no different. Much of this is caused by the tight plastic packaging of down during shipping, which can cause the scent to concentrate. Simply unwrap the down and fluff it, then allow it to air out for a few hours before use. The smells caused by confinement in tight plastic should dissipate.

Down Coverings

Box stitch is a box-patterned cover used in comforters and featherbeds. The stitching helps keep the down in place so it won't shift as it is used.

Baffle box construction uses a piece of fabric perpendicular to the top and bottom of the material. Baffle walls enable down to expand fully for its highest loft, and creates depth and strength in the bedding.

Gusset edges surround the outer edge of the down covering to maximize loft.

Thread count (TC) is the total threads which run vertically and horizontally in a square inch of the fabric which creates the covers for the down product. Higher thread count indicates tighter weave and gives softness to the material. A higher TC weave adds to a fabric's downproof qualities, or how well it contains the down fill.

Down comforters

The warmth of a comforter depends on the down fill weight and fill power. Maximum warmth at the lightest weight means lower fill weight/higher fill power. The ratio of comforter weight to bedroom temperature would be:

Light weight comforter fill power of 525+ equals +70? F
Medium weight fill power of 600+ equals 55-70? F
High or Winter weight fill power of 700+ equals -55? F

Down care

Today, quality down manufacturers put their down and down feathers through strenuous cleaning processes, eliminating dirt and dust to ensure that the down is allergy-free. However, very few individuals are actually allergic to down. They are allergic to the allergens, such as pollen and dust, which are found on feathers and raw down before cleaning.

How to Install a New Shower Fixture

One of the quickest ways to spruce up your bathroom is to replace a worn-out shower head with a new bathroom fixture. Replacement showerheads can be used to remedy a problem, such as a leaky shower head that has been blocked with lime and hard water deposits. A replacement shower head is an easy way to add value to a bathroom remodeling project. Best of all, this is one home-improvement project that doesn't require a lot of specialty tools.

Installing a Shower Fixture:

Turning off the water. This is not an absolute necessity, since you are not doing major plumbing work. Most showers do not have individual shut-off valves like your sink or toilet. To turn off the water to your shower faucet, you will need to locate the main water shut-off valve to your home. If you are simply changing a showerhead, you probably don't need to turn off your water.
Remove the old shower head Most shower heads simply screw into the water supply line coming out of the wall. Unless the old shower head is an older model, you should be able to unscrew it without any additional tools. In older homes, the shower head might have a screw holding it in place. If you have this type of shower head, use a pair of vice grips to remove the screw. The shower head will likely fall off in your hand after the screw is removed.
If the shower head is stuck, grip the water supply line with a pair of vice grips while twisting the shower head loose. To prevent scuffing or scratching your plumbing or new shower fixture, cover the ends of the vice grips with duct tape or place a cloth over the pipe before gripping the supply line. The tape or cloth will prevent the tool from leaving a mark while still allowing you to hold the supply line still while attaching the showerhead.
Prepare the pipe threads. Coat the threads of the water supply line with plumbing pipe dope or other waterproof sealant available in the plumbing section of most hardware stores. The sealant helps to create a watertight bond between the water supply line and the new shower head, preventing leaks and prolonging the life of your new shower fixture.
Attach the new shower head. Line up the threads on the new shower head with those on the water supply line. Twist the shower head gently into the supply line until it is finger tight. Once the new shower fixture is in place, shine with an appropriate bathroom cleanser.

Test the new shower head. If you've shut the water off, turn it on now and test the shower. Watch for leaks around the base of the shower head. If there are any leaks, remove the shower head and reapply the pipe dope or plumber's tape to the supply line and test it again.

Shower Fixture Tip:

After you turn the water back on, flush your toilet or run an outdoor faucet to help release air or dirt that has settled in your water lines. Dirt and other debris can damage bathroom fixtures and shower heads.

Sheets

It's easy to find sheets for every common bed size. Most sheet sets consist of a fitted sheet that wraps around the mattress, a flat sheet that stretches over the mattress, and a pillowcase or two. Fitted sheets are approximately the following dimensions:

Twin: 39 inches x 76 inches (80 inches for extra long twin)
Full: 54 inches x 75 inches
Queen: 60 inches x 80 inches
King: 78 inches x 80 inches
Cal King: 72 inches x 84 inches

When most people buy sheets, they look for a color they enjoy. And while the right color is essential, there is a whole lot more that goes into a good sheet set. The most important qualities in sheets are the thread count, fabric, and type of weave.

Thread Count

The thread count is the number of horizontal and vertical threads in a square inch of a bed sheet's fabric. Typically, a higher thread count means a tighter, softer and more durable sheet. It also makes sheet sets more expensive. You should purchase something with a thread count of at least 200 if you want your sheets to last a while. Sheets with a thread count of 300 to 400 are very nice while remaining quite affordable. Some sheet sets boast a thread count of 1000 or more. While these sheets will feel extra smooth, they probably won't last as long, since the threads must be finer in order to achieve such a high count.

Weave

Two types of weaves are usually used in sheet sets. A percale weave is closely woven with no gloss, which gives percale sheets a smooth texture. A sateen weave has more yarns on the surface of the fabric. This makes a sheet more lustrous and gives it the look of satin.

Fabric

The best fabric for sheets is Egyptian cotton, which is grown exclusively in the Nile River Valley. It is one of the world's strongest, most lustrous cottons, and Egyptian cotton sheets with a high thread count are generally considered to be the most luxurious.

Pima cotton is long-staple cotton grown in the southwestern United States, Peru and Australia. Pima sheets have a soft, silky finish. You might see some sheets made from "Supima" cotton. Don't let this confuse you. Supima is just the trademarked name for 100-percent Pima cotton grown in the United States. It stands for "Superior Pima."

Silk is the finest and strongest natural fiber, a fact that makes silk sheets a real luxury. They are shiny, smooth and expensive, but difficult to clean and maintain.

Satin is a polished synthetic fabric -- usually nylon. It is often used in luxury bedding, but it's not as strong as silk while being more difficult to clean. Sateen bed sheets are also smooth and lustrous, but shouldn't be confused with satin sheets. "Sateen" describes a weave, while "satin" describes a material. Furthermore, sateen sheets are usually made of natural fibers. They are usually less expensive than satin sheets.

Comforters

Comforters can be filled with down or some other down alternative. Down comforters are popular because they combine both softness and warmth. Down typically comes from geese or ducks, but goose down is fluffier and warmer than duck down. And a goose down comforter will last longer and look better than one made with duck down.
